Turmeric: The Alternative to Pain Medication
If you live with chronic pain most of the time, you have probably thought that you would do almost ANYTHING to make the pain go away right?
Unfortunately too many people resort to pain medications which, once they start, they find it difficult to stop. Pain medication becomes part of their daily routine and they can't imagine life without it.
Unfortunately, chronic use of pain medication wreaks havoc long-term on your health in so many other ways. Your liver, one of the most important organs in your body, feels the weight of this burden the most as it is primarily responsible for detoxification of foreign substances from the bloodstream; pain medication being a foreign substance. So when your liver is constantly having to detoxify the pain medication, it becomes tired. And when your liver is tired, like anything else, it doesn't function optimally so all the other jobs the liver is responsible for begin to take a back seat and your health starts to suffer.
Besides detoxification, the liver's main job is to regulate the levels of everything in your blood in an attempt to restore a balanced state. Your protein levels, hormone levels and cholesterol levels are just a few of the regulation jobs the liver has to do daily. But if the liver is exhausted from the never-ending task of detoxification, it is easy to see how our hormone levels, our cholesterol levels and our health overall can get neglected.
So what is a girl to do when pain, which is often a result of excess inflammation, never subsides? Well there are several natural approaches we can take to reduce inflammation which include dietary and lifestyle changes. And regular intake of turmeric is one of them.
Turmeric is a root plant that grows under the ground like ginger. It has a rich, bright orange color and is used in many foods. Turmeric is what turns rice yellow in lots of thai dishes and curries. You can find dried powdered turmeric in the spice aisle of just about any grocery store but you can also find the root often in the produce section. The root looks similar to ginger just a little smaller.
Turmeric contains an amazing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant compound called curcumin which fights inflammation at the molecular level. Many studies have been done on the effectiveness of curcumin on a number of health ailments when the curcumin extract is taken at high doses on a regular basis. It acts as an antioxidant and has also been shown to reduce pain within the body and is therefore often used as a natural pain reducer without the typical side effects of conventional pain relief medications.
The extract itself is considerably more concentrated than ground turmeric and is therefore the recommended source when looking to supplement over and above what is consumed in the diet.
In addition to experiencing pain, chronic inflammation plays a major role in so many health conditions Including digestive disorders, heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, dementia, mood disorders and autoimmune diseases such as arthritis.
So you can see why this natural plant extract has been hailed as a miracle cure for so many ailments.
Now unfortunately, curcumin is not easily absorbed by your gut. So for those with gut health issues, there are a couple of things to consider. For one thing, curcumin is fat soluble. So, as with fat-soluble nutrients (like vitamins A, D, E, and K), you should consume it with a meal containing good, essential fats to improve absorption.
The second thing to consider is to consume turmeric or curcumin extract with black pepper. Interestingly, a compound in black pepper called piperine has been shown to enhance absorption of curcumin, by as much as 2,000%!
So if you want to reap the health benefits of curcumin, you need to get a larger dose than just including turmeric in your food. This is where a pure curcumin extract supplement is your best option.

In conclusion, the active form of turmeric, known as curcumin, is an excellent supplement to take for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which are great to reduce pain associated with chronic inflammation. It also has other amazing health benefits, like brain- and heart-boosting properties, and even cancer-fighting properties.

Recipe: Golden Milk Drink
1 cup coconut milk (can/tin) or 2 cups of almond milk (without the hot water)
1 cup hot water 1 ½ tsp turmeric, ground
¼ tsp cinnamon, ground ½ tsp honey to taste
1. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan.
2. Whisk to combine.
3. Warm over medium heat, whisking frequently. Do not boil.
